What is Apple MFI Certification? Where to get the best MFi-certified cables

What is an MFi cable? What Does Apple MFi-Certified Mean?

What does it mean for "Apple MFi Certified" and how important it is? Apple MFi certification is a license shown that Apple (Apple Inc.) has authorized accessory manufacturers to mark the MFi logo on their products. MFi is the abbreviation of Made for iPod, Made for iPhone, and Made for iPad.

What does MFi mean?

Apple Inc.'s MFi Program, referring to "Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad", is a licensing program for developers of hardware and software peripherals that work with Apple's iPod, iPad and iPhone. The name is a shortened version of the long-form Made for iPod, the original program that ultimately became MFi.

Are MFi certified cables safe?

Inside each lightning connector is a tiny authentication chip that tells your device it's Apple MFI Certified. This is important because non-certified, or knock-off, lightning cables can be very dangerous to your device. … Non-MFI cable on the left with the warning message. Genuine MFI Para cable on the right.

Is MFi certified the same as Apple MFI certified?

However, not all accessories are created equal. Apple's MFi Program, known as Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad, is a licensing program for developers of hardware and software peripherals that work with Apple devices. … Unfortunately, not every product marked with an MFi label or marking is actually Apple MFi Certified.

Why It's Important to Buy MFi-Certified?

The MFi-Certified rating is important because it protects your device from potential damage or harm that could come from using an unauthorized accessory such as overheating, improper charging, port damage, or even iOS inefficiencies.

The Lightning Connector

The Lightning connector that iPhones, iPods and iPads have been using since 2012 is a proprietary connector created by Apple. Inside each lightning connector is a tiny authentication chip that tells your device it’s Apple MFI Certified. This is important because non-certified, or knock-off, lightning cables can be very dangerous to your device. (You may have noticed a warning message on your phone when a non-MFI cable was detected.) These cables can often times get extremely hot, cause damage to your phone, and even render it completely fried and useless.

The Certification Process

In 2012, with the production of our new line of lightning cables, Vibe Centre set out to become a certified Apple MFI Developer. The process is complex and long, but we knew it would allow us to produce high-quality, MFI-certified lightning cables. Before we could go into production, we submitted our product plan, designs and packaging to Apple for approval. Once they approved everything we were ready to begin production.

Testing & Approval

As part of the approval process, you must submit samples of your cables to Apple's independent testing facility to undergo rigorous mechanical, stress, and electrical tests. Beyond this, every single cable we make is tested twice during production with advanced electrical testing equipment to ensure that there are no defects and that every cable is up to the Vibe Centre and Apple MFI quality standards. Apple also routinely audits MFI Manufacturing facilities.

The Final Product

Vibe Mfi Certified Cable

This may seem like a lot of work just to put a small, white “Made for (Apple product)” logo on your packaging. But it’s absolutely worth it. That MFI badge symbolizes almost two years of hard work going back and forth between Apple, Apple's suppliers, and our own manufacturers to get our product just the way we imagined it. We take a great deal of pride in providing the best lightning cables in the world and we want our customers to be extremely happy with their purchase.

How to tell if your Apple lightning cable is fake?

Earlier this year, Apple filed a lawsuit against Amazon for selling counterfeit Apple products -- specifically, unapproved third-party Lightning cables and power adapters sourced from Mobile Star LLC -- on its website.

Apple purchased a number of third-party Apple-branded power products that were sold directly from, and fulfilled by, Amazon.com, and determined that almost 90 per cent of those products were counterfeit. According to the complaint, these counterfeit power products pose an "immediate threat to consumer safety" because they have the potential to "overheat, catch fire, and deliver a deadly electric shock to consumers while in normal use."

But not all third-party Lightning cables and power adapters are fake or in danger of exploding -- after all, Apple does license third-party companies to make MFi-certified accessories.

You can easily identify an uncertified Lightning accessory by taking a close look at some of the basic symptoms.

  • The connector: It might not properly connect to your device and fall off.
  • Overheating: If you are using a flawed product, its connector may get hot very quickly.
  • Slow charging: Your iOS device will charge rather slowly.
  • Syncing issue: You won’t be able to sync your device with the computer.

Avoid buying a super cheap cable

As mentioned above, Apple charges a flat royalty fee per connector. So, a fully compatible accessory shouldn’t be Cheap. Therefore, if you come across a power accessory which price seems to be too low, avoid it.

Most of the times, the low price may itself help you figure out whether the Lightning cable is fake or certified.
